Senegals are members of the family of African parrots that includes Meyers, Jardines, and Brown Heads. Senegals are compact and neat with smooth glossy feathers, and they sport a yellow vest and a pewter hood. Typically they're eight to nine inches in length. They exhibit a brash self confidence and in-charge attitude, and they don't hesitate to let other pets know where they stand on the social ladder (always below the Senegal). Above all else, Senegals excel at finding their way straight into their owner's heart. |

Senegals make excellent pets. They bond with their owners quickly and are loyal
and intelligent. In fact, they may tend to become too loyal, and somewhat
inclined to be jealous of other pets and children. Patience and persistence
are the favored remedies in such situations. |

Senegals are relatively quiet parrots, which makes them good apartment birds,
and they have fair talking ability. They are very good at imitating household
noises (it may be hard to tell if it's the phone or the senegal ringing).
They're not the attention hogs that cockatoos are, but nevertheless need regular
love and attention. Nevertheless, they get by very well with their toys while
their owners are at work. Compared to many other parrots, their cage area is
generally neat and clean. Senegals need a complete and varied diet, typically one of the high-quality pellets supplemented by fresh vegetables and fruits. Seeds may be given as a treat. Bathing is also important. A daily shower of cool water from a plant-mister will keep your Senegal looking sharp as a tack. With good care, a proper diet, and lots of love, a Senegal will typically live twenty to twenty-five years. |
