Jardine Parrots

With the exception of the Cape parrot, Jardines are larger than the other Poicephalus species. Resembling a small amazon parrot, these basically green African parrots are found in a band stretching across Central Africa from Liberia to Tanzania. The nominate species can be distinguished by its dark wing feathers. There is red/orange on the forehead that extends into the crown. This coloring can also be found on the thighs and front edges of the wings. Two or three subspecies of Jardine are also found, giving some variation in size and coloring.

Jardines make excellent pets. They are relatively quiet and sweet natured. Usually they are quick to make friends with everyone and show little tendency to favor one person exclusively. They are very good talkers.

Jardine's food requirements are easily satisfied. They eat nuts, seed, fruit and vegetables. To avoid vitamin deficiency problems, it is advisable to provide them with a multi vitamin/mineral supplement. A good pelleted diet should constitute at least half their diet.

Sexing: DNA or surgical sexing is the only sure way.
