Cherry Head Conure
Cherry Heads, also called Red Masked Conures, are one of the brightest colored conures. The body of a mature Cherry Head bright green and the head vivid bright red. At just over 13 inches in length, Cherry Heads are one of the largest conures. Young Cherry head babies don't look like their parents at all. They are mostly green and it isn't until they are several months old that their beautiful red feathers begin to grow in. It may take two or three years for the red mask to fully develop. The Cherry Head's beak is horn colored and there is a white ring around the eyes. Sometimes they are called the Christmas Conure because of their bright green and red holiday colors.

These birds become very tame and thrive on attention. Like most conures, they can be on the noisy side. Still, many Cherry head Conure owners report that their pet conures are not loud and screeching, although they're probably not the best bird for apartment dwellers.

A Cherry Head Conure can become a very good talker. These birds are favored as pets thanks to their calm, playful, inquisitive, and affectionate personalities. Another desirable quality is that they tend to be less nippy than other species of parrots and are not given to biting. They are very lovable. As a point of interest, there is a rather famous flock of Cherry Head Conures living wild in San Francisco. This flock is the subject of a book entitled "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill," by Mark Bittner. Mark spent a great deal of time studying these birds, which he shares with us via his book and an excellent tv documentary on his experiences.
